RECORD FEAT OF PERFORMING TEN HEART SURGERIES IN A RECORD OPERATIVE TIME OF LESS THAN FIVE HOURS
Press_ReleaseCoronary Heart disease is fast becoming the number one killer in our country, especially so in this region of Punjab & adjoining states. Not only the number of patients is growing very fast, it is afflicting people younger than 40 years. But with advances in medical sciences, the treatment modalities have also improved significantly over the last ten years and the field of Interventional Cardiology is coming of age. While about ten years ago, most of the cases were referred for Coronary Bypass Surgery, the scenario has taken a U turn today. In the last ten years, Coronary Angioplasty with intra coronary stenting has emerged as much safer, significantly less traumatic and patient friendly surgical approach for treating the patients with blocked coronary arteries. With the advent of drug coated stents, the durability of the procedure has also grown leaps and bounds. Not only has the technique evolved, the equipment (Balloons, Wires, Catheters etc) required for performing the angioplasty procedures has seen a sea change in the last ten years – the difference is akin to a 486 computer available ten years back v/s the latest Intel IV Pentium processor !

There has been a steep growth in the number of centers providing tertiary cardiac care. Mukat Hospital + Heart Institute, Sector 34-A, located in the heart of the city, was the first private heart centre in the city to provide sophisticated ultra modern Cardiac care facilities, including a modern Digital Caridac Cath Lab, Two Cardiac Surgery theatres and a well equipped Coronary Care Unit. The centre is within the reach of common man and is popular for its patient friendly approach and provides round the clock Emergency services in all faculties including Cardiology.

Despite all the improvements, the bottom line remains the person (read Cardiologist) who performs these procedures. With highly systematic and sophisticated training available abroad that hones the inherent individual skills, the speed of performing the procedure has also improved tremendously. However, since the surgery is being done on human heart, even a small mistake can be lethal. Hence speed of the procedures has to meticulously combined with skill and safety to avoid any fatalities. Dr. Sudheer Saxena, Senior Interventional Cardiologist, who carried out this feat in an established and one of the most skilled Cardiologist, who carried out this feat is an established and one of the most skilled Cardiologist of the country. He has been trained in these complex procedures at the Royal Perth Hospital In Australia and is regarded as one of the quickest and safest Interventional cardiologist in the country with a very high success (99%) and lowest mortality rates (<0.3%). Furthermore, he is only high volume operator who performs these complex procedures alone (‘Solo operator’) i.e. without the assistance of any junior cardiologist.

Although many large centers have emerged in the country, none of them can boast of the feat achieved by Mukat Hospital + Heart Institute on 9th September 2006. On this day, a total of thirteen patients underwent Coronary Angiography. Out of these, ten patients were deemed sick enough to require an immediate heart surgery as a life saving measure. Hence all these patients were than subjected to Coronary Angioplasties. The highlights of this feat can be summarized as follows:
  1. This is the highest number of Angioplasties over done in one single day by one single Cardiologist working all alone, the country.
  2. The procedures have been performed in a record time- a total operative time of 4 hours and 43 min to complete all ten procedures.
  3. All procedures, despite being difficult heart surgeries, were uncomplicated.
  4. All procedures were up and about within twenty four hours of their procedure.
  5. All ten patients haven been discharges in less than forty eight hours and have returned home safely.

It will not be out of place to mention that this hospital is functioning successfully for the last 7 years and is empanelled by Punjab/Haryana Govt., Ex-Servicemen contributory health scheme and all major public/private sector undertaking
